  • High Temperature Metallurgical Processing contains the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Thermal Processing of Minerals, Metals and Materials. This symposium explores physical and chemical transformations in materials that have been designed to facilitate the recovery of valuable metals or produce other useful materials. Representatives from both industry and academia focused on the latest innovative high temperature technologies. Because high temperature processes require high energy input, the presenters addressed the need for sustainable technologies that could provide low energy consumption and low pollution emissions. The symposium also examined the thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical reactions, phase transformations at elevated temperatures, and characterization of materials used or produced in high temperature processing.

  • This volume captures the contents of the talks given at the Workshop on Applications of High Intensity Proton Accelerators held at Fermilab Oct 1921, 2009. This workshop brought together experts from a variety of disciplines to explore new and profound ways proton accelerators can be used in the future. The workshop explored uses of such a proton source for producing intense muon, kaon and neutrino beams as well as using the intense protons for new forms of nuclear reactors that go by the name Accelerator Driven Sub-critical systems that promise to increase our available nuclear fuel supply by orders of magnitude while at the same time solving the nuclear waste problem. Intense proton beams can also be used to produce short-lived nuclear isotopes that are important in the medical industry.

  • This is the seventh in a series of international workshops on high-power and high-energy density microwave devices for accelerator, plasma physics, and defense applications. The scope of this workshop included accelerators for high energy physics, plasma heating and current drive in controlled thermonuclear fusion research, radar and directed energy/high power microwave systems, THz sources and technologies, and advanced 2D/3D computational tool development.

  • The generation and application of high power beams of electrons and ions by pulsed power technology was the main theme of this conference. Pulsed power compresses electrical energy in both space and time to efficiently create devices that have both high power and high energy content. This electrical energy can be converted into high power beams of electrons, ions and to generate high power microwave sources. High power electron beams are used to power microwave sources, for radiographing dense objects, for materials modification, or for various biological sterilization applications. High power ion beams are being explored for making new high-strength materials, nanopowders, and other commercial applications. Topics include: pulsed power technology, pulsed power switches, radiography, electron eams, electron beam applications, ion beam physics and applications, theory and modeling, as well as beams from ultra-intense lasers.
