1991年に『第1〜3集』が発売されてから30周年、各方面よりきわめて高い評価を獲得してきたボブ・ディランの『ブートレッグ・シリーズ』。その最新章は、ディランの膨大で多岐にわたる作品体系の中で、しばしば見落とされがちではあるものの1980年から1985年にかけての実に豊かな内容の鉱脈を再訪し、彼がソングライター、レコーディング・アーティストとして取り組んだ、挑発的とも呼べる新しい音楽的方向性にあらためて光を当てている。1980年代初頭、音楽業界はMTV、コンパクト・ディスク、デジタル・レコーディングといった新たに出現したトレンドやテクノロジーと立ち向かう事となった。その中でボブ・ディランは、新しいディケイドに向けた曲を書き、レコーディングし、自身のスタジオ録音カタログにとって欠かせないものとなる新たな章を築き上げていったのだ。『スプリングタイム・イン・ニューヨーク(1980-1985)』は、アルバム『ショット・オブ・ラブ』、『インフィデル』、『エンパイア・バーレスク』に取り組んでいた時期のディランがいかに創造的な状態にあったかを、完全未発表のアウトテイク、別テイク、リハーサル・レコーディング、ライヴ・パフォーマンスなどによって掘り下げている。デラックス・エディション（CD5枚組）には、ボブ・ディランが1980年から1985年にかけて残した57の貴重なレコーディング作品が収められていて、そのうちの54曲は、これまでいかなるフォーマットでも公開されてこなかったものだ。既発表3曲のうちの2曲は『ショット・オブ・ラブ』録音時のアウトテイクである「レット・イット・ビー・ミー」と「ドント・エバー・テイク・ユアセルフ・アウェイ」。前者は「ハート・オブ・マイン」インターナショナル7インチ・シングルのB面、後者は『ハワイ・ファイブオー : オリジナル・ソングズ・フロム・ザ・テレヴィジョン・シリーズ』で発表されていた。そして3曲目は、『インフィデル』のアウトテイクで、フル・フォースをフィーチュアした「デス・イズ・ノット・ジ・エンド」。1988年発表の『ダウン・イン・ザ・グルーヴ』に編集ヴァージョンが収められていたが、今回はじめてフル・ヴァージョンで聴くことができる。『スプリングタイム・イン・ニューヨーク :ブートレッグ・シリーズ第16集(1980-1985)』（CD5枚組）のディスク1収録曲は、1980年から1981年にかけてのディランが、「セニョール（ヤンキー・パワーの話）」や「ラモーナに」など、作曲家としてのヴァラエティ豊かなカタログに新たに加える事となった曲の入念なリハーサル、「井戸端の女」や「メアリー・オブ・ザ・ワイルド・ムーア」といったトラディショナル・フォークの再アレンジに取り組む姿を伝えてくれる。また、リンゴ・スターがゲスト参加した「ミステリー・トレイン」、「スウィート・キャロライン」、「フィーバー」、「エイブラハム、マーティン・アンド・ジョン」など活き活きとした仕上がりのカヴァー曲にも驚かされるが、これらの曲にはフレッド・タケット（ギター）、デイヴィッド・マンスフィールド（マンドリン）、ウィリー・スミス（キーボード）、ティム・ドラモンド（ベース）、ジム・ケルトナー（ドラムス）といったミュージシャンを起用。バックグラウンド・ヴォーカルには、クライディー・キング、キャロライン・デニス、グウェン・エヴァンス、レジーナ・マックレイらを迎えていた。 ディスク2には、チャック・プロトキンがプロデュースを担当したアルバム『ショット・オブ・ラブ』録音時のアウトテイクと別テイクが収められている。ディスク3と4のメインは、アルバム『インフィデル』のためにディランが書いた曲。そこでは、マーク・ノップラー（ギター）、ミック・テイラー（ギター）、アラン・クラーク（キーボード）、ロビー・シェイクスピア（ベース）、スライ・ダンバー（ドラムス）という豪華な顔ぶれのバンドが彼を支えていた。ボブ・ディランとマーク・ノップラーがプロデュースした『インフィデル』セッションからの曲として、「ブラインド・ウィリー・マクテル」と「ジョーカーマン」の未発表ヴァージョンも採用されている。 ディスク5には、ライヴ録音のトラック（アイルランドのスレイン城で収録された「イナフ・イズ・イナフ」、1984年3月22日に『レイト・ナイト・ウィズ・デイヴィッド・レターマン』で演奏した「ライセンス・トゥ・キル」）と、アルバム『エンパイア・バーレスク』制作時に残された別テイクやアウトテイクが収められている。ボブ・ディラン自身がプロデュースを

ボブ・ディラン 1997年作『タイム・アウト・オブ・マインド』発売25周年記念企画となるブートレッグ・シリーズの第17集『Fragments - Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol. 17』。『タイム・アウト・オブ・マインド』はダニエル・ラノワをプロデューサーに起用、緻密で大胆なサウンドをバックにディランの巧みな表現力により傑作の一つにあげられる。全米チャート最高10位を記録、グラミー賞で最優秀アルバム賞を獲得し、収録の「コールド・アイアンズ・バウンド」では男性ロック・ボーカル部門賞に輝く。ディランのキャリアは21世紀に入って再び隆盛を誇るが、その転換となった作品でもあった。このブートレッグ第17集は『タイム・アウト・オブ・マインド』 の最新リミックスに加え、1996〜97年のスタジオ・セッションのアウトテイクを中心に収録。アルバムが完成に至るまでをオーバータブのないヴァージョンで追う事により傑作の生まれた過程を明らかにしてゆく。また、デラックス盤では発売後に各地で開催されたライヴを収め、歌の多面的な魅力を解き明かしてゆく。

CD5枚組デラックス盤のCD1には、『タイム・アウト・オブ・マインド』オリジナルリジナル盤収録11曲の2022年リミックスが収められている。リミックスを手がけたのは、ブラウアー・サウンド・スタジオのマイケル・H・ブラウアー。音楽評論家のスティーヴン・ハイデンはライナーノーツでこう書いている。「スタジオにいたミュージシャンたちが実際にどのように演奏してアルバム全体を仕上げていったかがわかるようなサウンドにリミックスされている。ラノワが録音後に加えた効果や処理は除かれているのだ。しかしそれは、四分の一世紀前に複数部門でグラミーを獲得している名作をつくり替えてしまうことを意図した行為ではない。偉大な芸術作品を見つめ直し、新たな視点で提示しようとした結果なのだ。オリジナル作品のサウンドは神秘的で謎めいたものだったが、2022年版の『タイム・アウト・オブ・マインド』では、聴き手と演奏者の距離を可能なかぎり縮めることに主観が置かれている。

CD2とCD3に収められているのは、貴重なアウトテイクとオルタネイト・ヴァージョン。いずれも『タイム・アウト・オブ・マインド』のために書かれたオリジナル曲だが、1997発表時のソングリストには含まれなかった「ドリーミン・オブ・ユー」、「レッド・リヴァー・ショア」、「ミシシッピ」(のちにあらためて録音したヴァージョンが2001年の『ラヴ＆セフト』に収められた)、「マーチン・トゥ・ザ・シティ」も収録されている。そして、もう1つの未発表パフォーマンスが、スコットランド起源のトラディショナル・フォーク・ソングをディラン自身のアレンジで歌った「ウォーター・イズ・ワイド」。『タイム・アウト・オブ・マインド』を締めくくる叙事詩的な「ハイランズ」の前触れともいえるこの曲が、ディスク2のオープニングに据えられている。

CD4に収められているのは、『タイム・アウト・オブ・マインド』収録曲のライヴ・パフォーマンス。1998年から2001年にかけて残された音源のなかから選ばれたもので、ツアー・バンドの顔ぶれは、ラリー・キャンベル(ギター、マンドリン、ペダル・スティール、スライド・ギター)、バッキー・バクスター(ペダル・スティール、スライド・ギター、1998〜1999)、チャーリー・セクストン(ギター、2000〜2001)、トニー・ガーニエ(ベース)、そして、デイヴィッド・ケンパー(ドラムス)となっている。1998年5月21日ロサンゼルス収録の「メイク・ユー・フィール・マイ・ラヴ」は、「シングス・ハヴ・チェンジド」のマキシ・シングルに収められていたものだが、それ以外のディスク4収録曲は、いずれも、完全未発表のヴァージョンだ。

ファンへのボーナスとも呼べるCD5には、オリジナル版の『タイム・アウト・オブ・マインド』からは外された曲と、「コールド・アイアンズ・バウンド」と「トライン・トゥ・ゲット・トゥ・ヘヴン」の素晴らしいライヴ・ヴァージョンで構成されている。これらの12曲は、2008年リリースのブートレッグ・シリーズ第8集『テル・テイル・サインズ : レア・アンド・アンリリースト 1989-2006』に収められていたものだ。
